What Causes This Type of Damage?

That bashed in fender immediately before the door.

I see this constantly on EK Civics and other cars that tend to get riced. If it just showed up once or twice, I’d assume some sort of strange accident that only did damage to the fender, but cars with this type of damage are everywhere.

Anyone know what this is?

I did notice that on both of these examples, there is damage to the front half of the fender and the whole panel looks mildly misaligned. Is it just that the panel got shifted back enough that opening the door did the rest of the damage?

The door being opened while the car goes backwards into something.

It looks like that’s exactly what happened. A light bump - not enough to really mangle the fender - pushed it into the space normally occupied by an open door. The door opens and there’s a bend and crunch. Note on the silver one, the driver door has damage on its leading edge.

Probably struck something with the front left bumper and pushed back the fender. My guess, anyhow... I did the same with my Camry. I wound up taking the Sawsall to the back edge of the fender and sawing off an inch or so in order for the door to open unimpinged.

Opening the door causes that damage. What causes the clearance to disappear could be a number of things though.

A door that was forced open too far.

A friend of mine did this to his car when he was backing out of a yard. The driver’s door swung open and caught the fence.

That’s what I was going to say. Something like what happens when you open your car door in a strong wind.

Backing into stuff when the door is open.

Somebody tapped somebody else. Enough to shift the fender back a little. Next time the door opens... crunch.

One of those reasons why I don’t mind panel gaps that everybody complains about so much around here.

Keep the panels close they said... It looks so much better that way they said...

I think that’s it.

Just enough of a fender bender / bump to shift the quarter panel back a half inch, and the door finished it.

Front end impact, as others have noted. I had it happen to two cars of mine. Well, one was the wife’s Focus when a Camry cut across the front of us and shoved the front over, made my door get caught on the fender and I bent it to get out.

Second was my beater Talon that I bashed into snow banks with and one day bashed too much and caught my drivers door on the fender. Got out, kicked it in, and had clearance.

My boss did this to an H2 once. The anger of an H2 owner is an anger that is only written about in stories, most witnesses are killed in the brimstone that erupt from the H2 owner’s anus.

I was lucky to escape.

Ninety percent of the time it’s on the driver’s side of a beat Civic.

I wonder if there was something specific to old Civics that allowed the door to open too far? Perhaps a bad hinge design.

This is the result of opening a car door in a strong wind. The wind catches the door and pulls the hinges away and foreward from the hinge pillar. We do tons of these at the shop I work in, it’s a relatively easy fix provided the owner hasnt already smashed the fender in.
